Shawnee National Forest: Illinois’s Hidden Wilderness

Ask most Americans to picture Illinois and they’ll imagine flat farmland stretching to the horizon — an image that holds true for most of the state, but falls apart entirely once you reach Shawnee National Forest in the far south. Here, rugged sandstone bluffs, rock formations, and dense hardwood forest create a landscape that feels closer to Appalachia than the Midwest.

Garden of the Gods: Illinois’s Answer to the American Southwest

The centerpiece of Shawnee National Forest is Garden of the Gods, a collection of dramatic sandstone rock formations shaped over 320 million years by wind and water erosion. A short, family-friendly 0.25-mile Observation Trail loops through the most striking formations, including Camel Rock and Devil’s Smokestack, offering sweeping views across the forest canopy below. The site is particularly popular at sunset, when the sandstone’s orange and red hues intensify dramatically, and stargazing here is exceptional given the area’s official designation as one of the darkest skies in the Midwest.

Rim Rock and the Pounds Hollow Recreation Area

Nearby, the Rim Rock National Recreation Trail offers a longer, more strenuous 3-mile loop through similar rock formations with fewer crowds than the main Garden of the Gods trail. The trail passes an ancient stone wall believed to have been built by Native American communities as part of a fortification system, though its exact age and purpose remain subjects of ongoing archaeological debate.

Pounds Hollow Lake and Recreation Area, a short drive from Garden of the Gods, offers swimming, fishing, and camping in a quieter, less-visited section of the forest — a good base if you’re planning to spend a full weekend exploring the region rather than a single day trip.

Cave-in-Rock: Outlaw History on the Ohio River

At the forest’s eastern edge, Cave-in-Rock State Park centers on a large natural cave carved into a limestone bluff overlooking the Ohio River. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, the cave was infamous as a hideout for river pirates and outlaws who preyed on flatboats traveling the Ohio River trade route — a history that’s given the small surrounding town its name and its enduring frontier character. The cave itself is a short, easy walk from the parking area and offers a striking, slightly eerie glimpse into the region’s lawless past.

Giant City State Park

Giant City State Park, in the forest’s western section, gets its name from massive sandstone bluffs and rock formations that create narrow, street-like passages between towering stone walls — hence “Giant City.” The park’s Stone Fort Trail leads to a prehistoric stone wall structure built by an unknown Native American culture, believed to date back roughly 1,000 years. The park’s lodge, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, remains a popular overnight base and includes a restaurant serving hearty, family-style meals that have become a local institution.

When and How to Visit

Shawnee National Forest is best visited in spring (for wildflowers and waterfalls) or fall (for exceptional foliage color, among the best in the Midwest). Summer brings heat and humidity along with denser crowds at the most popular sites like Garden of the Gods. The forest spans a large area with limited cell service in many sections, so download offline maps and carry a paper map as backup before setting out. The nearest larger town for supplies and gas is Harrisburg, and most of the forest’s key sites are within a 30-45 minute drive of each other.
